In fairness to Mr. Hale, who is a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer and well respected in his community, the call to the coroner was not made until 3:20.  In fairness to the WM3, Mr. Hale's skills as a coroner were not up to the task of a trained forensic examiner required in this instance.  I do not think Mr. Hale would argue the point.

I don't know but I saw one of those crime shows with John Quionas... might probably not be the right spelling if I know me... but he was interviewing the Tennessee coroner and taking him to the floor in words. You know. I thought to myself that it was no better than Arkansas. This guy botched up a murder, too, and sent an innocent person to death row by his shoddy work.

Lord, please bless America again for I fear we have lost our minds and I know You would be ashamed of our justice system.

If that's the case...Mr. Hale should be forgiven for his tardiness and the WMPD should be held accountable for that screw-up.

But if he's gonna take on the job of coroner...he might need to take a continuing ed course in field work.

Q:  So is it your testimony Mr. Jacoby was with you all night until he went to work; is that your testimony?

There are not that many Dr. Quincy's running around on this planet.  This is a complicated case that requires real expertise and hard work.  I do not think the defense experts, some of the best in the country, have taken the time to drill down on this case and gather all the pertinent facts from the physical evidence.  Sure, they are limited in what they can learn from some mistakes made in the beginning, but they can do more than they have with the evidence that was preserved.  At least I hope they can.

A lot of times coroners are practicing doctors, they are appointed the coroner position and get a fee for every death they attend. They usually follow up with the autopsy.
There are inherent problems even with this situation, we had a coroner in Ontario that neglected to report abnormalities in babies deaths and concurred them to "crib death". Years later it came to light that he was shoddy, investigation ensued, the bodies were dug back up and rechecked...most were murdered or other causes of death.
The problem lies within the system where the coroner was losing money if he had to sit through court trials and inquests, calling them "crib death" was a quick way out.
I'm sure this happens more often than not.
My dad was killed in a fall down his stairs at home, I was an hour away, by the time I got there all emergency services were on scene. I had to decide on the removal service which is a funeral home. The coroner still had not arrived but was there in the next hour. All the road shift of officers were on scene for me. Detectives arrived along with Ident and processed the scene. My dad was not moved from his position until the removal service got there, took about 4 hours total. Coroner kept in contact with me as well as the guys on scene and informed me of the details afterwords.

Copper,
Very sad for your Dad.
I kind of think that there is common shoddy work when it comes to nursing home deaths too. There is actually a lot of money there... and too easy to replace someone when they die.

99% of the time I'm sure that a Quincy-type coroner isn't necessary.  My problem is that a case like this (triple homicide of 8 yr-olds) is a special case.

The WMPD should have known immediately that this was going to be something that they couldn't afford to fu*k-up. There are two many lives that were going to be affected and the public would demand quick and precise justice.

They should have phoned the State Police immediately and also asked for help from the forensics people in Memphis. "Kent the mortician", wasn't gonna be good enough (although there is no excuse for not being better than he was).

Hey Paid...Didn't the State, or the FBI, or both offer their help? And weren't their offers rebuffed because the WMPD were being investigated by the State/FBI at the time for Internal criminal conduct/activities?

Kent Hale Coroners Report

http://callahan.8k.com/wm3/kenth.html No photographs of the lividity refered to, no descriptions of the colour of the lividity, speculation made by coroner as to possible sexual assault instead of just stating facts, poorly written report. To my understanding, a Coroner is meant to be a finder of facts.

I think one or two State investigators were involved (Hester and somebody else)....but I've heard that the case would have been taken over by the State Police if there wasn't an arrest in 30 days.

Lucky for Gitchell he got a confession before the 30 days were up.  Otherwise those State people would have been snooping around the office.
