Prosecutor Scott Ellington joins 1st Congressional District race

    Lindsey Tugman

    Mar 1, 2012

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A prosecutor who helped negotiate the deal that freed the men known as the West Memphis Three has joined the Democratic race for an east Arkansas congressional seat.

Prosecutor Scott Ellington filed paperwork Thursday to run for the party's nomination for the 1st Congressional District. Ellington made his bid official shortly before the noon deadline for candidates to file.

Ellington is the third Democrat running to challenge Republican Congressman Rick Crawford. State Rep. Clark Hall and Arkansas State University economist Gary Latanich have also filed for the seat.

WM3 prosecutor, ex-lawmaker file for office

    01 March 2012

LITTLE ROCK — The prosecutor that struck a deal to free the West Memphis Three and a former state representative who resigned after a felony conviction just weeks into his first term were among the last candidates to file for office before today’s noon deadline.

A Tennessee lawyer also filed to challenge President Obama in Arkansas’ May Democratic primary as the state’s weeklong filing period came to a close.

Prosecutor Scott Ellington of Jonesboro filed as a Democrat to run for the 1st District congressional seat. He struck a deal last year with lawyers for Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley that allowed the men convicted in the 1993 deaths of three West Memphis boys to go free after 18 years in prison.

  • I think it's 50/50.

After his comment that a compromise was reached in this case, I became a bit frustrated.

    I am confused too!

Part of me feels very strongly that he at least has a working relationship with the Defence Team and we are better off with a Devil we know plus I have heard good things about him from people I respect.  It would be ghastly if we ended up with a new Prosecutor who is part of the ole boy cronyism network!

However, Wolf did make the point that he will stay in position as Prosecutor up until polling day - and beyond, if he loses!  There is always the chance that he could get things going before he leaves.  Hell, he could even re-open the investigation, impanel a grand jury, get an indictment and then leave it to his replacement to prosecute!  If his timing is very sophisticated!!

It would appear that he has now made his fb account 'private' which is interesting campaigning strategy!

I guess it is also critical whether many local voters think this case is an important issue or not.  In a way, if it becomes an issue, he is not being very fair to those regular folks who have no interest in the state of health of the Arkansas Judicial system.

All in all, I just do not know.  All I do know is that this case is not going to go away.  It all comes down to how much noise we can make compared to those who are either happy the three are out and the case is history or feel that three child killers have been released.

I am dreading the possible 'negative' campaigning that might come out of all this.

Do you get the sense that I am 'confused' about this?

  • I noticed Dustin McDaniel came out in favor of Ellington's main opponent in the democratic primary.  Sets up well to cast Ellington as a reformer and advocate for real justice against the "good ole boys" if he is willing to play that role or feels the need to do so.
    Aha.  OK.
Is there an initial 'first round' thing just between the democrat candidates followed by the real thing when the democratic choice (whom ever it is) battles it out with the republican choice?
And this is just to represent one district in one State?
And only registered democrats can vote in the democratic primaries?

Can someone sign up for one party, vote in primary, then have a change of heart, cancel membership and join the other and vote in their primary?

IF the Arkansas voters can make the WM3 an issue......maybe Ellington will try to separate himself from Dustin's puppet by reopening the case?   I would think Dustin has to believe the case could be a huge problem for him and to back someone besides Ellington is very odd, IMO...unless Dustin has more important skeletons in his closet.

  • Miranda,
I have known several Democrats who have registered as Republicans simply to have the opportunity to vote in the Republican primary. You have to be  a registered member of the party to vote in that party's primary election. As a registered Democrat, I am ineligible to vote in the Republican primary election. However, I have considered changing and registering as a Republican so I can vote for Santorum, the fruitcake.

The scary thing is that any of these bozos running for the Republican nomination have a shot because the American public is not too bright.
